About Maris Stella Symphonic Band
The Maris Stella Symphonic Band (MSSB) was an initiative by the school’s first principal, Brother Chanel Soon. From its humble beginnings as a brass band, it later evolved into a military band as a result of the National Band Movement in the mid-’60s. Since then, it has grown into a large ensemble with full symphonic wind band instrumentation.
Comprising over 80 young budding musicians, MSSB has performed to high accolades to both the local and international audience. The ensemble has also been invited to play at various public and school events in recent years, including at the Istana on Labour Day in 2016, with the Salvation Army Brass Band for a Christmas Concert in 2017, as well as at the Singapore Botanic Gardens for Stellar Marist in 2018, an event combining the unique talents of the performing art groups in both the primary and secondary school sections for the school’s 60th Anniversary.
Under the baton of Music Director Adrian Chiang, the band has climbed to greater heights and has performed spectacularly over the years, consistently achieving the highest accolades in competitions, such as the bi-annual SYF Arts Presentation in 2013 and 2015 where the band received Certificate of Distinction. The band has also participated and done well in the Singapore International Band Festival in 2014 and 2018, obtaining the Gold Award in Division 2A for both years.
