Carnatic music is a system of music commonly associated with Southern India. Although there are stylistic differences between schools, the basic elements of Sruthi (the relative musical pitch), Swara (the musical sound of a single note), Raga (combination of notes in a melodic form), and Tala (the rhythmic cycles) form the foundation of improvisation and composition in Carnatic music. The music provides ample scope for improvisation and on-stage “extempore” creation.
As a mark of taking Indian Classical Music into the futuristic realm, in this program SIFAS features the young Maestro Abhishek Raghuram, a torch-bearer of the traditional form of this music with a contemporary touch and a gaze into the future. Well known for his on-stage creativity, he will share stage with other highly accomplished musicians of his generation Akkarai Subhalakshmi on Violin, Anantha R Krishnan on Mridangam and Vazhappally Krishnakumar on Ghatam.
